Jason Witten denies rumor he’d leave Cowboys to coach Vols

After Tennessee’s attempted hire of Greg Schiano as football coach broke down on Sunday following fan and social media backlash, multiple names have been floated in the rumor mill as possible candidates for the vacant head coaching position.

“People around you can say ‘Oh, maybe one day he’d be a good coach,’ and I could consider something like that,” Witten said. “Certainly, I could see that happening — but no time soon. I’m enjoying and loving what I’m doing right now.”

Tee Martin, the Tennessee quarterback who led the team to victory in the BCS title game following the 1998 season, is being considered by the university for the head-coaching vacancy, according to Fox Sports.

The head coach position at Tennessee has been open since Currie fired Butch Jones on Nov. 12. Currie promised to spearhead “an exhaustive search” to replace Jones. Former Buccaneers coach, and current ESPN broadcaster, Jon Gruden is the coach most Tennessee fans would like to see in Knoxville next season.

One of the main selling points in Boras’ Arrieta binder is career workload. Arrieta has pitched 1,161 regular-season innings in the majors. When Zack Greinke agreed to a $206 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks in December 2015, he had almost 2,100 innings on his résumé.

The exchange between the two had occurred after the Patriots’ first drive in their 23-3 win over the Bills. Brady had fired an incomplete pass on third-and-11, and as he came to the sideline, McDaniels said something to him that led to a pointed reaction.

Rivers leads Bolts to 4th straight win, 30-13 over Redskins

Chargers: Left tackle Russell Okung went down heavily in the first quarter and limped off the field with a knee injury. He returned later in the first half, however.

“For the talent that we have, obviously this is not where we want to be,” Thunder forward Paul George said. “But we’re going to remain optimistic, though, about the future and what we can do. Once we can find a way to really do it night in and night out, it’s no panic mode, but we have to start playing better. It’s getting to a point where we can’t allow ourselves to be at this point. We can say we’re going to figure it out, we can say all that. But at some point it’s gotta stop.”

After 26 games, the Thunder sit ninth in the West at 12-14. They entered Monday having won four of their past five, showing signs of correcting their rugged start to the season. After starting 0-9 in games decided by eight points or less, the Thunder’s past four wins were all decided by two possessions or less.

“It’s a wake-up call, and I take full responsibility,” Atkinson said. “I know I need to be way better, and I will be.”

The Oilers’ last game also ended 1-0 with the only goal 34 seconds into the opening period, but they were on the losing side Sunday at Toronto.

That result is indicative of what is happening recently with Edmonton (12-16-2). The Oilers put 41 shots on goal Sunday to the Maple Leafs’ 23 but couldn’t get anything past Toronto backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney.

“Hockey is a weird game,” Oilers captain Connor McDavid said. “Some nights you don’t do anything and you get one or two (points), and some nights you have your legs and you get nothing.”canadiens_1238_3df17376da6a2688-140x140

He found it when the Blues needed it most.

“Tough loss on the road,” coach Mike Budenholzer said. “We’ve just got to keep competing for more of the 48 minutes and stay together . and find a way to win on the road in a tough environment.”

The Hawks led 75-71 after Miles Plumlee’s jumper with 1:28 left in the third quarter.

Porzingis answered with a pair of free throws that sparked an 11-0 run during a four-minute span. It ended with two free throws from Lance Thomas that increased New York’s lead to 82-75 with 10:33 remaining in the fourth.

Of course Cleveland went Cleveland and didn’t even try to block Smith, which forced Kizer to try to scramble to his left almost immediately. Unfortunately for Kizer, Ngakoue wisely decided to stop at the level of the quarterback, which put him in perfect position to take Kizer down.

Logan Shaw had a goal and an assist, and Silfverberg returned from a five-game absence to score the tiebreaking goal late in the second period of the Ducks’ 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

Mired in a scoring slump, St. Louis forward Vladimir Tarasenko was looking for that lucky bounce.

Tarasenko scored with 36 seconds left in overtime, and the short-handed St. Louis Blues beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Sunday night.

“I think when so many chances and the puck doesn’t go in, you just have to play simple and get that lucky bounce,” Tarasenko said. “But I think overall our line is playing better every game. We’re getting more chances all the time.”canadiens_013_d3f4a2d9e61f7c90-140x140

Verizon, NFL agree to new 5-year deal worth nearly $2.5 billion

One of the NFL’s biggest sponsors is coming back.

In addition to live streaming, Verizon will have broader highlight rights and plans to experiment with augmented reality and virtual reality. It also hopes to use the NFL deal to produce original content across Verizon’s network of sites organized under a new content company called Oath.

Miller went down in a heap after getting shoved out of bounds and left the game with a leg injury, in what would be a significant loss for the Texans. D’Onta Foreman is already out for the year and newly claimed Andre Ellington is inactive.

Ravens 14, Texans 7 The Ravens went for it on fourth down and flipped the ball outside to Alex Collins, who took it 28 yards down to to the 8. Collins hit paydirt on the next play and Baltimore now has 14 unanswered points.

With Roberto Luongo sidelined by a leg injury that is expected to keep him out of action for what first-year head coach Bob Boughner has called an extended period of time, the Panthers are going with James Reimer and rookie Harri Sateri in goal for now.

One of their best chances to tie it came with about six minutes left in the second when Brendan Perlini sidestepped the Blue Jackets’ Lukas Sedlak and charged on a breakaway, only to have Bobrovsky knock down his shot. That was typical of the Coyotes’ evening.

They couldn’t capitalize despite skating on a power play for the last 2:53 of the game. They played 6-on-4 after pulling Raanta for the last 1:12, but Bobrovsky held them off with the help of two key blocked shots.

Payton noted his frustration with the officiating in the game, which the Falcons won 20-17.

When you see the Giants benching Eli Manning, how cutthroat and ruthless is the business side of the NFL?

But now it is done, easing the tension that was expected at this week’s meeting in Irving. Many ownership and league sources say they now suspect that Jones and other owners will push for significant staffing changes among the league’s executive vice presidents and for changes to how Goodell handles player disciplinary matters.

But with the contract done, the only question, as an owner told ESPN, is when Jones speaks during the one-per-club meeting on Wednesday, “Will he be entertaining, or will he fall flat?”

The Saints coach charged out on the field and angrily gestured and yelled at an official who had not seen him signaling for a timeout.

“I called a timeout, and then he asked me again, and I said I have already called a timeout,” Payton said after the game. “I probably said it with a little more vigor than I was supposed to but I had enough. I have to be smarter than that.”

The Saints were flagged 11 times for 87 yards, while the Falcons were penalized four times for 35 yards.

“It was just one of those games. I have never seen anything like it,” Payton said. “I have never been a part of a game like that and it is frustrating but our guys will bounce back.”royals_088

I can own up to that. I’ve got to improve, no doubt.

From the Packers’ end, it’s simple: They must run the table to match their 10-6 finish of 2016, when they won their final six games. Backup quarterback Brett Hundley, fresh off Sunday’s 26-20 overtime victory over the Buccaneers in Lambeau Field, must play well enough to help them beat the Browns, and then starter Aaron Rodgers needs to return from his collarbone injury in Week 15.

“I want to apologize to Josh for last week in Buffalo. I know our coaches work really hard, and they are responsible for putting us in a great position to succeed. I just want to get that off my chest,” Brady said in opening remarks, before he answered any questions.

When Brady was asked if those types of outbursts were part of the emotion of football, he replied, “Yeah, but a lot of people see it and they think the nature of our relationship might be something like that, but it’s really the exact opposite of that. I’ve been feeling bad all week and haven’t had a chance to say it. He knows how much I love him.”

“I’m good. It happens,” Siemian said Wednesday, via the Denver Post. “You look around the league, you see quarterbacks take their licks. I feel like I’ve taken my fair share, no doubt. But it’s all on me. I’ve been reckless with the ball at times, made some bad throws.”

Siemian, who ranked fifth in the NFL in passer rating (106.9) after victories over the Chargers and Cowboys before plummeting to 31st (72.7), specified that the nature of his downturn has been mental struggle.

“I’m kind of out of sync at times,” Siemian said. “In times I haven’t played well, there hasn’t been a real rhythm with me and that trickles all the way through the offense.

Detroit had the chance to make the NFC North race a little tighter with a win.

Just one week after showing some signs of life in a 23-16 win over the Chicago Bears, the Packers hit a wall last Sunday against Baltimore in a 23-0 shutout loss. The team is 1-4 SU and ATS in five games without Aaron Rodgers and nothing about a matchup against one of the best defenses in the NFL suggests that things are likely to change this Sunday. Green Bay has lost each of its last four games on the road against the Steelers and are 2-7 SU in their last nine games against teams with winning records.

The Seahawks haven’t spent high-end draft picks on offensive linemen since choosing Okung and James Carpenter the first rounds of the 2010 and 2011 drafts, respectively.Cheap Basketball Jerseys Being able to retain Stamkos was no doubt the plan, and it worked out better financially than anyone could have imagined, but the Lightning hitching their wagon to Kucherov would have been easy-to-stomach consolation prize.By Adam Gold It’s hard to believe, but Staal is entering his fifth with the Hurricanes.1 Cubs fan ever.Beating Tulane when I was a freshman, he said.

But it didn’t. The Vikings kept rolling with Case Keenum who threw for 282 yards and a pair of touchdowns. They’re still in second place in the NFC standings with the win, their seventh straight, and their lead in the division expands to three games.

The Cowboys were in must-win territory with the NFC East race mostly over and the Wild Card contenders pulling ahead. And as much as Dak Prescott needed bounceback performance, he didn’t have one. LA’s pass-rushing duo of Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram is possibly the most fearsome in the league right now and despite left tackle Tyron Smith’s return, Prescott had another tough game. He threw two picks and no touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 28-6 loss.

The late game didn’t really have any playoff implications. Washington kept itself on the fringes with the win, despite the offense being devastated by injuries this year. The Giants are 2-9 and seem to be just waiting until head coach Ben McAdoo is fired.orioles_022

Status update:

Week 13 is the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” week in which players get to wear customized cleats for one game and promote charitable efforts that are near and dear to them.

“One of the great NFL traditions is how our players passionately support important causes in their communities and around the globe every year,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in 2016. “They are incredibly creative by nature so we are not surprised how they are seizing the opportunity this week with inspiring expressions of their charitable commitments on their cleats, online and through social media.”

Keep an eye for more great tributes like Prescott’s going into Sunday.

A direct snap to special teams ace Nate Ebner led to a 14-yard gain that kept the Patriots’ offense on the field.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, the play resulted in a knee injury for Ebner that was serious enough to immediately rule him out for the remainder of the game.

But the play eventually led to a 2-yard touchdown run for Rex Burkhead that gave New England an early 7-0 lead. The clever fake that the Dolphins couldn’t stop might not have even been Bill Belichick’s call, but Ebner’s at the line of scrimmage.

Ebner made a call before the snap. Looks like he ordered the fake on the field because, I’d guess, the Patriots saw a vulnerability in film study that they could expose with the right look.dodgers_019

Fantasy intel for all 32 NFL teams ahead of Week 12

Below are notes covering each of the NFL’s 32 teams from a fantasy perspective. Use these tidbits to make the best waiver-wire, trade and lineup decisions for Week 12. Be sure to check back each week of the season for a new version of the Fantasy 32.

Glenn was the seventh overall pick in the 1996 draft by the Patriots after a stellar, yet improbable, career at Ohio State.

Glenn walked on to the team in 1993 and eventually became the nation’s best receiver in 1995 when he won the Fred Biletnikoff Award and was named a consensus first-team All-American.

Regardless of what may have been reported, the Committee is working within the financial parameters outlined to the ownership at the May meeting. The negotiations are progressing and we will keep ownership apprised of the negotiations as they move forward. We do not intend to publicly comment on our discussions.”

“I’m disappointed that things didn’t work out because this is a special organization and a great place to be,” McCoy said. “I want to thank Vance for the opportunity he gave me and the entire organization from Mr. B (majority owner Pat Bowlen) all the way on down.

Here’s what happened: the ball was snapped too high, allowing the defensive line to come crashing in, Cousins caught it, but not wanting to take the hit, he lateraled the ball to his running back who got hit by three players. Video of the play went viral as people kept making fun of Cousins for sacrificing Kelley.

Speaking Monday on a local radio show with Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier, Cousins explained what went into that play. According to the quarterback, Kelley is the one who said he’d be willing to take the hit.nike_bears-402
